SW’s report: It’s a public footpath with 2 adjoining fields, with a river on one side, which the cows also access regularly. As we entered the second field we immediately noticed that there were 2 or 3 calves with the 20 or so cows (the bull we noticed later). Within 10 m of entering the field the cows started running towards us so we immediately let off the dogs. Unfortunately one is slightly geriatric and a little unaware of her surrounding, so she trotted 3-5 meters from the path at which point she was immediately charged. The cows then surrounded her and started to use her as a football, basically taking turns to butt and try to stamp her. We of course were terrified and tried to make some noise and scare them off of her, to little or no avail.

Report: “I was walking my dog on a lead on the public right of way approaching the bridge which leads past Cut Lane Farm. I was aware that there were cows with calves in the field, close to the track which is the public right of way. I heeled my dog close to me on my left hand side, away from the cattle. Suddenly, a group of cows turned towards us and charged. I was headbutted, thrown to the ground and was then trampled by several cows. I was screaming for my life and believed that I was going to die. I have sustained severe bruises to my legs, arms, chest and foot, and have received medical care for a suspected broken rib. Fortunately, my dog managed to escape across the cattle grid and seems unscathed.”

“I have severe bruising to my legs, arms, foot and chest. I am keen walker and runner, but now I am now frightened of walking/running in the countryside. I was treated in A&E, probable fractured rib.”

“There was a warning sign saying “Bull in field” and a sign saying “No dogs allowed on farmland” or something to that effect.”

Anthony’s report: The public footpath cut through the middle of the field that had a herd of cows and calves. I have walked this field many times and told my friend and 7 year old son that we should be careful not separate the cows from their calves. The cows then moved away from us leaving the path clear for us to walk through. But they then circled behind us and started to approach aggressively. This spooked my dog who remained on the lead and the cows then charged and trampled me and continued a sustained attack. Every time I tried to get up they knocked me down. One cow in particular then led the ongoing attack using its hooves, head and horns. Holding onto its horns bought me some time until my friend was able to rescue my 7 year old son who was thankfully uninjured and then return to yell at the cows to distract them. This made them back off and I was able to get up and limp to the fence and climb over and call the emergency services who sent a helicopter and ambulance.”

“I have multiple broken ribs. Stitches to a large open wound on my leg. A large haematoma on the side of my head. I spent 5 days in the trauma unit of Brighton Hospital.”

“I have reported this to the local school and vet to help raise awareness.”

“I have much sympathy for farmers but I think that cows with calves should not be allowed on fields with unprotected public footpaths.“

Attack near Belstone – the situation with dangerous cows in this area is long-standing.

Report: “I was walking with 3 dogs and saw a cow coming towards me, so I got off the main path with the dogs to give the cow room to get past. As it was going past it suddenly turned & headbutted me in the chest , I fell to the ground & she started trampling , pushing & kicking me, I thought I was going to die. I lay still & eventually (probably not as long as it felt) she wondered off. There is always someone around, but not that day. I think adrenaline got me up, back to the car with the dogs & I drove home. Once there I told my partner & 2 girls & then I seized up. They took me to A&E and I was immediately admitted. I remained in hospital for nearly 2 weeks as I had 7 broken ribs, punctured lung & lots of abrasions ( later found I had kidney disease & the trauma had affected that too) whilst in hospital I got pneumonia too so I was a mess.”

“It wasn’t investigated because apparently the cows have grazing rights on the moor (including this area) & several farmers have their cows there so didn’t know whose cow it was.“

“My main concern is that I nearly died & I didn’t do anything wrong or anything to cause what happened to me. I’m still not right & never will be the same again , yet there is no compensation or comeback. That is surely not right. My partner went to the police but nothing happened.”

Killer Cows comment: Grazing rights do not give a grazier right to graze dangerous animals, the grazier is responsible for that cow and its behaviour – but how do individuals know who’s cattle trample them – there should be a joint liability of graziers for this area.

Cee wants footpaths kept open with electric fencing if cattle are in a field with a footpath.

Cows with calves in the field.

Description: I was walking my dog on a footpath across the field, she was on a lead, she is scared of cows so was pulling away from them. We got herded into the hedge by the cattle and then I got head butted and knocked over. I managed to get out of the field but then realised my phone had been knocked out of my pocket so I had to go back. I tied Kenza up and went to look for it. Unfortunately I was knocked over again and then there was a sustained attack by two or three of them. I really thought my number was up. They were trampling me and head butting. They only stopped when I stopped moving and I eventually managed to crawl to a gateway and escape into another field.”

“I have chipped a tooth, another is very wobbly. I had a nose bleed. I am covered in bruises and can barely walk. This has only just happened so I am not sure of the extent of my injuries.”

Update: Cee has now been assessed at hospital and found to have broken ribs and a broken vertebra as a result of the cow attack – these are significant and serious injuries that will take time to recover from!

Cee would like “warning signs when there are cows with calves in fields with footpaths and footpaths kept open with electric fencing, with fines for farmers who don’t do this.”

Report: “My husband and I have walked through this field for many years with our 3 dogs on leads with no problems, our dogs were quiet. This particular day the cows were very noisy and unsettled. They ran down the slope towards us and bowled me over and then l was trampled. My husband managed to drag me away and two of the dogs ran away, one stayed with us.”

“I needed emergency hospital treatment for badly crushed legs and slight concussion. I spent several days in hospital and had treatment over months for ulcerated legs and was off work for 6 months.”

“We informed the farmer and the police and did try for some form of redress but after several months were told as we were fighting the farmers union we had no chance of success and we couldn’t afford to pursue it further. The local paper did a report on this subject. I do think there could be an electric fence particularly when cows with calves are in the field.”

My mum and I were walking on a public footpath with dogs on leads. There was a group of cows with calves on the other side of a large field, they were a way off and we weren’t concerned as our dogs are very well trained, they are used to cattle and ignore them. The cows charged towards us, we instructed our dogs to sit back from us – which they did. One cow got to my mum, pushed her over to the ground with its head and began trampling her. I then did my best to fight it off but it kept throwing me off with its horns so it could continue trampling.

There was a group of cows with calves in the field, at the far end.

I had my dog on a lead as we walked through the field.

I was on a public footpath, walking through the field and a group of possibly 20 cows charged across the field towards us. They attacked my dog initially, throwing him into the air and then turned on me throwing me to the ground. They then tried to trample on both of us while we were on the ground.

I was able to get up and I ran, they chased us for 1/4 of a mile.

My dog is sore and possibly bruised.

I have reported this to the Health and Safety Executive, they are investigating.

Angela’s story – Aggressive cow attacks walkers in Cheddar Gorge

We were walking along the footpath and a lone cow and calf were coming towards us. As we passed by, not making any noise and giving them a wide berth, the cow charged at my friend and started to head butt and attack him, pushing him into the hedge with force with repeated head butting.

Not an experience I would wish on anybody! For me, I was completely unaware that this kind of thing happens, and happens far more frequently than you think!

26/08/2023 – Goosnargh, Lancashire, details of an attack involving a mixed herd of beef cattle, with cows, bulls and calves.

It was around 09.30 on Saturday morning of August bank holiday and rather than walking my dog around the houses, I decided to take him into the fields at the back of my estate. There is a public footpath that crosses the field that I have walked many times without any concern and whilst I could see that there were cows, I didn’t feel uncomfortable about passing through (perhaps my naivety!) as the cows were some way off and I have walked through plenty of fields with cows in before. I was minding my own business, with my dog on his lead, not presenting any threatening behaviour when a herd of some 20/25 cows starting charging towards me. There are parts of the incident which I cannot fully remember but I do remember being stood there, thinking that surely they were just coming to encourage me to change direction, never did I think that they would attack me.

In 2008, I was walking with a friend. We were on a footpath crossing farmland in West Sussex, and we had three dogs walking quietly with us and all on leads.
