Gemma’s Story: a stand-off with an aggressive cow.

I was petrified – the cow was about to charge me.

On the 3rd of September, 2020, my sister and I were walking along a footpath up to the summit of Nicky Nook Fell, near Skorton, in Lancashire. We were heading from east to west and had my twelve-week old puppy on a lead with us.

Jan’s story: saved by her walking poles

On the 25th of June, 2020, I was walking with my friend and his dog. We were on a footpath on Bethecar Moor, near Oxen Park, in Cumbria. We crested a hill in the middle of a field, and saw that cattle were dispersed generally across the field, so it was not possible to walk around them.

Steve W: two more close encounters with cattle

The herd put out “spotters” to look for me.

I have reported several of the more unpleasant experiences I have had with cattle over the years. The first two incidents are detailed here: Two cattle encounters on the Pennine Way. Here are two more examples .

Shropshire lass: stampeding bullocks

I heard thundering hooves…

In August, 2020, I was walking with my partner along a public footpath in the Reabrook Valley Nature reserve, Shrewsbury. We didn’t have a dog with us.

We walked through a field where there were a group of Friesian bullocks grazing. The cattle were about 50 yards away, near the hedge. We walked through a narrowing path leading to a second field, when suddenly I heard thundering hooves coming up behind us.

The cattle ran very fast and passed very close to us in the narrowed section. We were nearly knocked down. I pushed my partner into a wall to get him out of the way.

We weren’t injured, but were badly frightened.

Tracey’s story: chased by stampeding cattle.

We could hear the cattle were building up speed behind us.

On the 26th September, 2020, I was walking with my husband along a public footpath on the east side of the River Ouse, near Isfield in Sussex (OS grid reference TQ442159). We had our Scottie dog on a lead. Continue reading “Tracey’s story: chased by stampeding cattle.”

TL’s story: attacked and trampled by cows.

On the 26th September, 2020, my husband and I were on a footpath in Gloucestershire. We were walking along the Wye River heading from Brockweir to Bigsweir, on the St Briavel’s side of the river. We were in a field at the bend of the river (co-ordinates on google map: 51.729914, -2.686725). Continue reading “TL’s story: attacked and trampled by cows.”

David’s story: several frightening encounters with cattle.

In the summer of 2015, I was walking with my wife along part of the Wales Coast Path in Carmarthenshire, not far from St Clears. As we approached a field (Fox Hole Farm), we saw approximately 30 dairy cattle. They were all cows, with no calves and no bull. RR’s story: fractured ribs and shattered pelvis.

By the time we saw the calf… it was too late.

The Attack

On the 22nd August, 2019, I was walking with my husband on a popular public footpath near Belper, Derbyshire. There were no warning signs at the entrance to the field, but we saw there were Aberdeen Angus cows in the field. We knew that a lot of people walk through here, so we felt safe.
