Attacked by a Limousin cow

I was knocked unconscious.

On the 3rd of July, 2017, I was walking with my husband along the Calderdale Way. We were close to Norwood Green, Halifax, in West Yorkshire. There were no warning signs about cattle on display, and we didn’t have a dog with us.

A group of Limousin cows were lying down in the far corner of the field. We kept as far away as possible to the right hand side of the field. The cows started to stir, but we kept walking calmly. Continue reading “Attacked by a Limousin cow”

Paul’s story: cracked ribs in Gunnerside

One of the mother cows ran at me…

I live in Gunnerside, North Yorkshire.
On the 12th June this year, I was trying to move a group of cows away from my driveway as they have previously put dents in our cars. The group included some calves.
One of the mother cows ran at me, head butted me in the chest, and cracked my ribs
I didn’t need any immediate treatment, but went to hospital later.

Laura’s story: injured during an escape from a field of cows

I scaled the fence as quickly as I could, but it was coated in barbed wire.

On the 12/5/2020, I was running on my own along a public footpath near Aylesbury, when I had a frightening encounter with a herd of cows. Continue reading “Laura’s story: injured during an escape from a field of cows”

Abigail’s injuries

Our footpaths should be safe, particularly in an area promoted as a place for recreational walking.

Recently we published Abigail’s story, where she describes being pushed from cow to cow before being knocked to the ground. (You can read her account of the cattle attack here.)

Since posting the story, Abigail has sent us photos of her injuries. Her leg was badly bruised and required stitching and repeat dressings.

Abigail’s story: pushed from cow to cow

They went for my dog, and then surrounded me.

On the 23rd July 2019, I was walking with my dog on a public footpath along the western shore of Coniston, in the Lake District.  We encountered a group of cows on the footpath. They went for my dog, and then surrounded me, pushing me from cow to cow. Continue reading “Abigail’s story: pushed from cow to cow”

Lucy’s story: Butted and trampled

I was knocked to the ground, and repeatedly kicked and head butted

On the 11th August this year, I was walking with my dog on a public right of way, near Shipton under Wychwood, Oxfordshire.

I noticed the cows in the distance, and so I called my dog to my side, put her on a short lead and made her walk to heel. She is a Labrador and is used to being walked around livestock. Continue reading “Lucy’s story: Butted and trampled”

Jude’s story: butted and trampled

I was headbutted, trampled, and dragged along the ground.

What happened?

On the 28th February, 2019, I was walking alone with my dog on a lead, along footpath number three below Tutbury Castle , Staffordshire. In the field was a herd of cattle. Initially, I didn’t notice any bulls or calves, but later I realised there were at least two bulls in the field, along with cows, heifers, and bullocks. There were calves present too. They were a mix of breeds, Aberdeen Angus, Charolais and Friesian. Continue reading “Jude’s story: butted and trampled”

Dog trampled and walkers injured

The dog was very badly bruised and lucky to be alive.

On the 9th of June, a group of four of us were walking along a footpath from Rockford Common car park (Ringwood, Hampshire). The path runs parallel to the road, and we were heading towards Linwood. We had a dog on a lead.

We spotted a group of brown cows and waited for them to cross the path. We the proceeded to go down the path. Continue reading “Dog trampled and walkers injured”

Surrounded and trampled by cows

I ended up on the ground, being trampled under the hooves of 10 or 15 cows.

Cindy’s story

On the 30th September this year, I was walking on a public footpath in Cornwall, on a circular route from Millook, near Bude, through Trebarfoote Farm, which is where the incident happened. Continue reading “Surrounded and trampled by cows”

Carolyn’s Story: another cow attack in the New Forest

The cow put its horns either side of me – and launched me onto the heath land.

What happened?

In February 2018, I was walking my dog in the New Forest, in Dibden Purlieu, near to the Heath roundabout.

I was walking along the path with my dog walking to heel, when I saw some cows quite a distance away from me. They were small, with really long horns, and looked like Highland Cattle. They were just quietly grazing, and I didn’t feel concerned.

One of the cows seemed to make eye contact with me, came towards me from quite a distance, and started running at me. I turned to go back the way I came to try to avoid it, but next thing it was right up behind me. Continue reading “Carolyn’s Story: another cow attack in the New Forest”

Ruth’s story: broken nose and fractured ribs.

The cows repeatedly kicked me all over my body.

In 2008, I was walking with a friend. We were on a footpath crossing farmland in West Sussex, and we had three dogs walking quietly with us and all on leads.

There were cows in the field. I don’t know the breed, but they were mainly brown cows. They didn’t have young calves but there were some probably not yet fully grown. Continue reading “Ruth’s story: broken nose and fractured ribs.”
