When it comes to navigating your way through a field of cattle, there is plenty of advice out there. Some of it is good, some of it is bad, and some of it is just plain useless.
In this area, we aim to collect all the various pieces of advice together.
- Links to official documents and guidance, both for walkers and for farmers.
- A collection of good advice.
- A collection of useless advice.
- A collection of myths
Please be aware that no advice works 100% of the time. We know of many walkers who were behaving sensibly and carefully, following the standard procedures and guidance, and who still ended up being chased by cattle and, in some cases, severely injured.
What to do after an injury?
To sue or not to sue? This is something you must consider carefully. We give our opinion here. Read how Libby successfully sued a farmer for compensation after a cattle attack, and take a look at David’s account of pitfalls and delays.
If you have any useful (or useless) pieces of advice you wish to share, please feel free to add in the comments sections below. But, beware. We reserve the right to add your comments to one of our collections – and to decide exactly which collection it belongs in!

We experienced an horrific prolonged attack by cows in Cumbria 9 years ago. We had walked on a walkway which was part of a recommended route by our Air B and B in Brampton Cumbria. I reported it to local council and heard nothing !!! If my husband had not whistled to try to gain attention we would both be dead !!! The high pitched whistling seemed to un -nerve the herd . After they became distracted we ran and scaled a fence. Had there not been a hawthorn bush that we used behind us to limit the space that they could stand we would have had a different outcome ! We had a dog on a short lead but eventually let her off so she could run with us as she didn’t leave our side ! I suffered some physical injuries and both of us suffered psychological effects that remain with us today. You have our total sympathy and support in your campaign. Thank you for raising the profile of cow attacks !
