Shropshire lass: stampeding bullocks

I heard thundering hooves…

In August, 2020, I was walking with my partner along a public footpath in the Reabrook Valley Nature reserve, Shrewsbury. We didn’t have a dog with us.

We walked through a field where there were a group of Friesian bullocks grazing. The cattle were about 50 yards away, near the hedge. We walked through a narrowing path leading to a second field, when suddenly I heard thundering hooves coming up behind us.

The cattle ran very fast and passed very close to us in the narrowed section. We were nearly knocked down. I pushed my partner into a wall to get him out of the way.

We weren’t injured, but were badly frightened.

Tracey’s story: chased by stampeding cattle.

We could hear the cattle were building up speed behind us.

On the 26th September, 2020, I was walking with my husband along a public footpath on the east side of the River Ouse, near Isfield in Sussex (OS grid reference TQ442159). We had our Scottie dog on a lead. Continue reading “Tracey’s story: chased by stampeding cattle.”

David’s story: several frightening encounters with cattle.

In the summer of 2015, I was walking with my wife along part of the Wales Coast Path in Carmarthenshire, not far from St Clears. As we approached a field (Fox Hole Farm), we saw approximately 30 dairy cattle. They were all cows, with no calves and no bull. Aggressive cattle and ruined walks.

A pleasant walk was turned into a nightmare.

We receive many reports from people describing how their peaceful walk was disrupted by the actions of aggressive cattle.

In many of these cases, nobody has been seriously injured, but people have been badly frightened. What should have been a pleasant experience was turned into a nightmare. In addition, many people report feeling apprehensive about future walks in the countryside. Continue reading “Aggressive cattle and ruined walks.”

Chiaki’s story: had to hide in a bush.

I had to wait for help in a bush.

On the 16th August 2020, I was walking on my own along a public footpath by the Cuckmere River in East Sussex.

I came across a group of black cows, who followed me. I had to jump into a small muddy stream to escape from them, then had to wait for help in a bush, surrounded by the cows. I was rescued by strangers.

I was frightened, and had scratches from the bush, but luckily no other injuries. I reported the incident to the police but, as far as I know, nobody is investigating it.

There were no warning signs about cattle, but a sign saying no dogs unless on a lead. I didn’t have a dog with me. If there was a warning about aggressive cows because of calves, I would not have used the public path especially on my own.

Jay’s Story: a geocaching adventure spoiled

“Caution. Bull called Henry.”

On the 21st June, 2020, two of us were walking along a public footpath in the Sedgeberrow area, Worcestershire. We entered a field which had a warning sign saying “Caution bull called Henry” and also a public footpath sign. Continue reading “Jay’s Story: a geocaching adventure spoiled”

Zoe’s story: trapped by cows

We were trapped between a herd of cows and a ten-foot fence.

In April, 2019, I was walking with friends through Tyneham Village, in Dorset, with my dog (Rosie) on a lead. We followed the footpath from the village to go up the hill and back onto the top, and to head back to the car park.

A group of cows became very interested in us. My dog was well behaved and on the lead – but the cows came close and I became frightened. Continue reading “Zoe’s story: trapped by cows”

Lucky escape from a field of bullocks.

The bulls ran straight at me

A walker from Meriden tells his story.

On the 1/5/2020, I was walking on my own on a public footpath, close to the B4102, just south of Fillongley, North Warwickshire. When I entered a field, along the footpath, I saw about 10 large bullocks (I think they were about 2/3 the size of a fully grown bull and quite large).
