Theresa’s Advice

I know I was lucky to have survived. My advice to others is here…

In June, 2016, I was attacked and injured by cattle. My story was told here: Theresa’s Story: stamped on by a cow .

In April of the same year, a lady was killed in Belford, Northumberland, so I know I was the lucky one. I told my story to the local Tourist Information Centre, the local paper, and the local radio… all in a bid to save lives. Continue reading “Theresa’s Advice”

Shropshire lass: stampeding bullocks

I heard thundering hooves…

In August, 2020, I was walking with my partner along a public footpath in the Reabrook Valley Nature reserve, Shrewsbury. We didn’t have a dog with us.

We walked through a field where there were a group of Friesian bullocks grazing. The cattle were about 50 yards away, near the hedge. We walked through a narrowing path leading to a second field, when suddenly I heard thundering hooves coming up behind us.

The cattle ran very fast and passed very close to us in the narrowed section. We were nearly knocked down. I pushed my partner into a wall to get him out of the way.

We weren’t injured, but were badly frightened.

Tracey’s story: chased by stampeding cattle.

We could hear the cattle were building up speed behind us.

On the 26th September, 2020, I was walking with my husband along a public footpath on the east side of the River Ouse, near Isfield in Sussex (OS grid reference TQ442159). We had our Scottie dog on a lead. Continue reading “Tracey’s story: chased by stampeding cattle.”

TL’s story: attacked and trampled by cows.

On the 26th September, 2020, my husband and I were on a footpath in Gloucestershire. We were walking along the Wye River heading from Brockweir to Bigsweir, on the St Briavel’s side of the river. We were in a field at the bend of the river (co-ordinates on google map: 51.729914, -2.686725). Continue reading “TL’s story: attacked and trampled by cows.”

David’s story: several frightening encounters with cattle.

In the summer of 2015, I was walking with my wife along part of the Wales Coast Path in Carmarthenshire, not far from St Clears. As we approached a field (Fox Hole Farm), we saw approximately 30 dairy cattle. They were all cows, with no calves and no bull. RR’s story: fractured ribs and shattered pelvis.

By the time we saw the calf… it was too late.

The Attack

On the 22nd August, 2019, I was walking with my husband on a popular public footpath near Belper, Derbyshire. There were no warning signs at the entrance to the field, but we saw there were Aberdeen Angus cows in the field. We knew that a lot of people walk through here, so we felt safe. Aggressive cattle and ruined walks.

A pleasant walk was turned into a nightmare.

We receive many reports from people describing how their peaceful walk was disrupted by the actions of aggressive cattle.

In many of these cases, nobody has been seriously injured, but people have been badly frightened. What should have been a pleasant experience was turned into a nightmare. In addition, many people report feeling apprehensive about future walks in the countryside. Continue reading “Aggressive cattle and ruined walks.”

Melanie’s Story: seriously injured by cattle attack.

I constantly relive the nightmare… the flashbacks are utterly terrifying and extremely distressing.

On the 6th July, 2020, I was walking a very familiar footpath, in the far west of Cornwall. I was with my daughter and two grandchildren, and we had our two dogs on leads. The path was very well-used. All of us including the dogs were very used to country walking.

Craig and Audrey: attacked by an angry cow.

The animal charged my wife… crushing her chest with its head.

Update 12th October 2020

Since the attack on myself and my wife (see my story below), the Health and Safety Executive have fully investigated the attack. They paid a visit to the landowner, and the cows have been removed from the spot where the attack took place.

They even came to see us face to face to inform us of the outcome of their investigation, and I would like to thank them for their time.

I would encourage anyone else who is attacked by cows to make sure they contact the Health and Safety Executive. They do take it  very seriously.

Unfortunately, my wife is still off work, 10 weeks on from the attack.

Craig’s story

On the 29th July, 2020, I was walking with my wife along a bridle path between Kettlewell and Starbotton, in the Yorkshire Dales. We had our little dog with us.

We came across a couple of cattle, and one calf was with them. At first we thought one of the cattle was a bull. I picked up our little dog, as she is just small, and we tried to give them as much distance as possible. But we were in the confinements of a walled bridle path (see photo above).
